VVC: More fleas from the dog in the manger

For years, Victor Valley College has kept locked the public tennis courts that, according to state law, must be made available to the community. Now in a further insult to the community it claims to serve, VVC has taken additional steps to exclude the public.

The Summer 2009 Victor Valley Community College Schedule of Classes (page 63) now lists an "Open Tennis Lab," for students only, which runs from 6:00 A.M. to noon, and from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M., every day of the week. This cynical pretext allows VVC to make the mendacious claim that the courts are in use during these hours, so there can be no public access.

Tennis players may wish to consider this shabby treatment when VVC proposes new bond issues.

The really tragic aspect of the whole mess with the tennis courts at VVC has been (and continues to be) that the high desert desperately needs some kind of tennis center -- someplace with enough courts to hold real tournaments, and serve as a focal point for the local tennis community. With ten courts, VVC could be that focal point. Unfortunately, it appears that one or more tinhorns are attempting to establish a feudal feifdom as a means of self-aggrandizement.
