Local area court maps updated

We've updated the page that used to link to several of the available courts in the area. Now, this page shows an interactive map with all (well, most) of our local tennis courts. You can pan and zoom to see what's available, and click on "map pins" for more information. To get a better view, you can also click to go to a larger version that shows descriptions and gives you the option of getting directions to and from any given court.

www.highdeserttennis.org/hdta_courts.html

We have courts from Ridgecrest to Phelan to Big Bear Lake City, and everyone in the middle, including Adelanto, Apple Valley, Hesperia, and Victorville. If you know of a tennis court that's not on the map, drop us a line and we'll add it. We're also missing some descriptions on some of the courts, so if you find a known court that needs more information, again, drop us a line.

USTA Pro Circuit event in Claremont

Michael Mcclune, Zack Fleishman Headline Strong Field at Pomona Valley Hospital USTA Pro Classic

The Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center USTA Pro Classic $10,000 men’s event is the first USTA Pro Circuit men’s futures event following the US Open and the 38th of 53 events scheduled for the year.

This year’s scheduled field includes top-seeded Americans Michael McClune, Zack Fleishman and Marcus Fugate. Last year’s champion, Carsten Ball, was recently chosen to represent Australia in a Davis Cup match against Chile and will not be playing this week.

Final qualifying matches for the tournament take place Monday starting at 11 a.m. with main draw action beginning on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

“The quality of the tennis to start the qualifying has been unbelievable,” said Barry Friedman, tournament director. “Coming on the heels of the US Open everyone is excited and ready to have a great week of tennis in Claremont.”

There will be a women’s luncheon on Wednesday where for $25 ladies can eat lunch and enjoy the tennis, as well as being entered into a raffle for a spot in a round-robin event with the pros.

On Friday there will be a high school clinic and coaches workshop from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is free.

Friedman added that many of the players are being housed by area families or staying at the Sheraton Ontario Airport, the tournament hotel and one of the event sponsors.

The USTA Pro Circuit is the largest developmental professional tennis circuit in the world, consisting of 94 events and more than $3.2 million in prize money. The caliber of play at a $50,000 challenger is close to that of the ATP, and many of the top players from these tournaments also compete in tour-level events.

Michael McClune, 19, of Irvine, Calif., is currently at a career-high ranking of No. 341. McClune had a breakout season in 2007, winning the USTA Boys’ 18s to earn a wild card into the main draw of the US Open and winning the first two singles titles of his career on the USTA Pro Circuit, at $15,000 Mansfield, Texas, and $10,000 Claremont, Calif. McClune also won the doubles title at Claremont with partner Nikita Kryvonos. In 2008, he has reached the final of a Futures event in El Salvador and the quarterfinals at $50,000 Carson, Calif. In April, he served a practice partner for the U.S. Davis Cup team that took on France. He also trained with World No. 1 Roger Federer in Dubai this spring.

Zack Fleishman, 28, of Playa del Ray, Calif., enters the main draw at No. 463. He made headlines last July at the US Open Series event in Los Angeles, upsetting top seed Fernando Gonzalez in the first round and reaching the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Radek Stepanek. He qualified for the 2007 Australian Open and reached the second round while sporting red-white-and blue-dyed hair. Fleishman finished 1998 ranked No. 2 in the USTA Boys’ 18s and was chosen to represent the U.S. in the Sunshine Cup (Junior Davis Cup). He played one season of collegiate tennis at UCLA in 1998-99 before turning pro in 2000.

Nima Roshan, 23, is currently ranked No. 584. This year he has had strong results with a finals appearance at $10,000 Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and just last month he reached the semifinals at $10,000 Guayaquil, El Salvador. He played at Brigham Young University (2003-2006) where he was the No. 1 singles and doubles player. Before his college career he was ranked in the Top 40 of the US juniors and the 5th ranked junior in Southern California (2002).

Marcus Fugate, 20, of Fairport, N.Y., is currently ranked No. 619. Fugate burst onto the professional scene in 2006, defeating Donald Young during the year and advancing to his first professional final at $10,000 Buffalo. He recently reached the singles final at $10,000 Tampa, Fla., against Daniel Garza, and captured the doubles title at $10,000 Vero Beach, Fla., with partner Lance Vodicka. Fugate also advanced to the semifinals at $15,000 Little Rock, Ark., and $10,000 events at Orange Park, Fla., and Peoria, Ill.

Labor Day Tournament Results

Brian Wilson pulled out his third title in four years as the former Illinois star beat Lester Cook of Marina del Rey, 6-4, 6-2 in the men's open Labor Day final at Spring Valley Lake Country Club.

Wilson also got the better of Cook in the doubles final, where he and partner Gorazd Gavrilov beat Cook and Norman Tam 8-7 (10-8).

Congratulations to everyone who played.

Tournament Directory Hassan Humayun said the tournament couldn't have been run without the help of sponsors: Cemex, Crismali Foot and Ankle, Puri Orthopedics, and Caldwell Kennedy & Porter.
